Public Companies

The sector at a glance

Austin's public-company sector covers the businesses that file with the SEC and answer to public shareholders while being headquartered in — or anchored to — the Austin metro, plus the investor-relations and corporate-communications discipline that surrounds them. The metro's listed base is unusually barbelled: two of the largest companies in the United States by revenue and market value sit here (Dell Technologies in Round Rock and Tesla in Austin), alongside a deep bench of mid-cap technology, life-science, consumer and real-estate names such as Q2 Holdings, Cirrus Logic, Silicon Labs, SailPoint, Natera, Vital Farms, YETI and Summit Hotel Properties, and a long tail of micro-caps. Layered on top are multinationals that run major Austin campuses without being headquartered here — NXP's US operations, AMD, Apple, Samsung, Applied Materials, IBM — and the practitioner economy that serves all of them: IR officers, disclosure counsel, financial printers, wire services, transfer agents and IR-website vendors. The buyer for this content is rarely a retail investor. It is an IR director building an earnings script, a CFO deciding whether to reinstate guidance, a general counsel mapping an 8-K trigger, a corporate-communications lead handling a cyber incident, or a board member preparing for proxy season.
